A central question is: how neurons encode information in the
sequence of action potential they emit?
In 1943 McCulloch and Pitts proposed the first neuron model:
the threshold gate. The characteristics of
their model was that they treated a neuron as a binary device.
That is they distinguished only between the occurrence and absence
of a spike.
