A central question is: how neurons encode information in the sequence of action potential they emit?

In 1943 McCulloch and Pitts proposed the first neuron model: the threshold gate. The characteristics of their model was that they treated a neuron as a binary device. That is they distinguished only between the occurrence and absence of a spike.
